I love Greek mythology. It’s the only thing I liked about English class in Jr. High school.
But recently, someone said to me, “So and so is very good with his hands. He has the Midas touch.”
Now, I don’t understand why we continue to use this as a good thing. Sure, everything Midas touched turns into gold. But he did asked for that wish because he was greedy. He soon regretted his decision, because he couldn’t eat anything. In the end, he touched his daughter, who turned into to gold.
One version of the story has him jumping to his death into a river, which explained why that certain river was so rich with gold.
So, to me, the Midas touch is something I perceive as negative. I’d rather be “good with my hands” than “have the Midas touch.”
Maybe it’s just me, and I’m weird.
But are there any sayings that confuses you or you have problems with?
