dangit. i can't even delete my own comment. lame. 8 )love.

Understanding compared to knowledge. I think in reality, we need to strive for understanding more than knowledge (well, we nee to strive in trust more than either of those) but i just read in Ps 119:100, the way to get understanding is to OBEY!!! whoo!!!

Well, I will agree with the guy when he says God talks to us through the bible and that everything we need to know is in the bible, but I'll disagree in the idea that that's the only way He'll talk to us. I heard this before, "Compelled by the Spirit (in any way whether it be through people or something we hear in our head), confirmed by the word (God will confirm what we hear through His word).

What we need to see is that the whole point of the bible is not for knowledge, not for slamming people and their ways, not for belittling others while raising ourselves up, rather, it's a "book" on love where all the laws of the prophets are summed up in two commands: Love God and love others the same way. Though the bible is a huge part of the Christian life, it's not the end of it. It's interesting that Peter would write "Make every effort to add to your 1)faith 2)goodness; and to goodness 3)knowledge; and to knowledge, 4) self control; and to self control, 5) perseverance; and to perseverance, 6) godliness; and to godliness, 7) brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, 8) love.

Interesting that knowledge is #3 that leads to 8...love. I guess that's why Paul would pray for the Ephesians to know the love that surpasses knowledge....

That's psycho. To think of that kind of love...psycho.

I think you all got some valid points but "God looks at the heart"...We as people try to use our thinking to think about what God would do...it is not possible..."God ways are not our ways"...Whatever you wear...make sure your heart is right with God...besides...He see through our foolishness...clothes and all...you can't dress us sin!...it is what it is! So that being said "Come as you are"...even if you have on a robe (clergymen/women)...you are still filthy in the sight of God...let's just thank God for Jesus...a lamb without spot or blemish...the rest of us are filthy, but covered by the Blood of Jesus!

I could also quote Romans 2:24 "God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you" by how callous and how judgmental and how unloving we are by approach.
but to each their own, right?

However, let me ask you what Tony Campolo once asked (since many of the tactics i'm familiar with is the fear of hell tactic): If there was no promise of heaven OR hell, would you still follow Jesus?

You are all still "doing nothing".
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven." Matt 7.21
If all of you navel gazers find the perfect evangelism method let me know. Until then I will (along with millions of others) use the tried and true methods of the early church (see Acts), William Boothe, The Jesus People Movement, etc. Of course none of the previously mentioned were perfect and, God forbid, "turned some people off". But in general were responsible for millions of people who are now in Heaven.
Talking ourselves out of what ACTS and The Gospels clearly spell out is not something the Holy Spirit takes lightly. The Dead Church Jesus wrote to in Revelation 3 was "once alive" but now is dead. Dead things do NOTHING. Jesus threatens them in order that they should come back to life and do what living things do (multiply, etc.).
Here is a start-step away from the computer...go tell someone about Jesus.
"Be watchful and strengthen the things which remain..." Rev. 3.2

Big D, well spoken. Am I to take it that you believe we are to do nothing and rely on our Faith alone to add numbers to the Church? I know God is the best at everything, he is the author of creation. But, do you think God wants us to live on faith alone with no action on our part? In Acts 3 they marketed, evangelized, healed, ministered...they got out amongst unbelievers. I am not saying that I disagree with you, because you offered a piece of the puzzle I am looking for. I just believe that we have to get out and deliver the gospel to non-believers and not just fellowship with Christians.

What I am really wondering now is how to better state my position. I have helped churches with mainstream marketing and I feel there is a way that I can consult them to show them that they don't have to spend the money in this manner. I am not a pastor or minister so they look to me for marketing advice not theology and I am looking for a way to present my position in terms that don't come off like I'm preaching to them.

You don't know how much this is helping me. Thanks to everyone commenting.

I think in the end, the best "marketer" is God. It's cliche, I know, but whose better? Do people lack faith in what God can do?....or maybe people aren't seeing results because God wants them to do something different?

In the end, God knows more people than we do and He knows the people that would "fit" best at a certain church. There's a biblical blueprint in how to gain more people, Acts 2:42-47, cruising with each other everyday, devoting themselves to the word and prayer everyday, having things in common (which is probably Christ) and so on. It says in the end that they didn't add numbers, but rather God did. "And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."

Don't think it works? It's been working for us...because God said it would... just my two cents.
